Roger Mayer Voodoo Series
Voodoo 1 -
More information »
The Voodoo-1 has been designed and optimised to suit a wide range of pickups. It is the best choice for humbucking pickups and produces bright clear tone colours that will make solos stand out without sounding too thin. Using single coil pickups and 4 x 12 cabinets gives the addition body with bite that is necessary to cut through. The Voodoo-1, of course is equally happy with combos at low volume and make these small amps sound like big stacks. The distortion produced feels particularly tube like in operation and the Voodoo-1 slips into distortion with silky smoothness and compression characteristics usually only associated with vintage classic tube amplifiers The volume control of the guitar is very effective in controlling the amount of distortion and the guitar cleans up to it's original tone very easily. The Tone control is of advanced design and has been optimised to compliment various pickup types. The Gain control enables the unit to be used as a power booster without distortion up to full maxed out grunge grooviness. The Output control sets the amount of boost required.
Electronically the Voodoo-1 shares all the same basic Voodoo Series features with dual output buffering or hard wire output etc. The distortion section uses a unique combination of the best discrete and IC design techniques to emulate the type of distortion found on many classic tube amplifiers. It allows the player to create a wide range of distortion effects from mild to extreme whilst reacting to the most subtle nuances in touch and playing.
The Voodoo-1 is housed in the new style enclosure with both dual direct drive buffered outputs or hard wire output and has provision for an internal 9-Volt Battery (battery life 150Hrs) or can be powered from a 9-Volt DC Power Adapter (not supplied). Extensive internal filtering ensures that noise free operation is maintained even with the most basic of adapters. The dual direct drive outputs that are capable of driving very long leads without any loss and in fact you can use a speaker lead for the outputs if you want without any hum. This direct drive true bypass feature is standard on all our voodoo series and in effect reduces the output lead length to zero. This results in greater detail and fidelity than using two long lengths of guitar leads in traditional hard wire bypass set-ups. The problem of cable noise induced by vibration on stage is eliminated together with electrical magnetic interference induced into shielded cables from lighting rigs etc. Possibly of more importance there is no tone sucking at all from the output length of guitar cable. After all the ultimate guitar cable would have a lead length of zero, and guitar players can detect the difference between long and short cables easily. The overall signal quality in the unit is thus guaranteed right up to amplifier and this overall performance exceeds any other method in use today. When using a Voodoo Boost as the last device in a signal chain the distance to the amp does not come into consideration and long leads can be used successfully in recording situations e.g.: playing in the control room.
FEATURES :
MULTI-MODE OUTPUTS / HARD WIRE BYPASS/ TWO BUFFERED OUTPUTS :
The Voodoo-1 has a true hard wire output plus two buffered outputs that can drive long cable lengths with no high frequency loss. These buffered outputs are disconnected when the hard wire output is being used. This means that all performance situations are catered for whether you want a true hard wire output or your situation calls for the advantages of buffered outputs.
RAPID BATTERY CHANGE :
No more screws to loose!. Slide the front panel back and there is the battery. It could not be simpler or faster.
BATTERY LIFE :
150Hrs or more using a premium grade alkaline 9 Volt type.
EXTERNAL POWER ADAPTER / SUPPLY : An external AC adapter (not supplied) can be used and access is through a standard DC power jack ( 2.1mm centre pin ) situated next to the jack sockets. Internal onboard filtering ensures that optimum low noise performance is maintained and diode protection provides peace of mind in case of polarity setting mistakes.
Connection protocol: It uses the standard negative centre pin connection protocol used by many leading manufacturers.
Specifications: 9 volt DC. Regulated output is recommended.
Current rating: 50mA or more.
ERGONOMIC DESIGN :
The position of the jack sockets and DC power jack are all on the same side of the enclosure and face away from you thus enabling the effect to be optimally positioned in pedal board set-ups.
Size: Width 170 x Depth 112 x Height 57mm. Weight: 640g with battery.
"It´s a very effective distortion box with a gain stage that runs from the lightest crunch to one of the flappiest, dirtiest old style distortions I´ve heard for some time. Added to that is a tone control that thins or thickens the distortion with plenty of output boost for soloing levels. The distortion is very tube-like in its compressed tonality and more importantly it reacts like a good tube to guitar volume alteration.
" Guitar Sept/-92
"A sleek high-gain distortion pedal - not a re-issue fuzz, but a new pedal from the man who made effects for none other than Hendrix himself. It gives a thick, ballsy sound, great for extended soloing, with rich harmonics for classic controlled feedback. Back it off for a dence and meaty rhythm sound. Classic old and new sounds at a great price." "But top of the heap is ROGER MAYER´S VOODOO-1. Great ideas, classic sounds, and still with that sense of the dynamic that separates the imitation from the innovator." " Star Buy!"

Voodoo Bass -
More information »
The Voodoo-Bass is so named because it adds a gutsier bass equalisation to the Voodoo-1 distortion sound. This enables players who favour single coil pickups to reproduce quite effortlessly the rounded, bluesy sound of classic pickups such as the Gibson P90. The comprehensive Gain and Tone variation provided by the Voodoo-Bass enable a very wide range of distortion sounds to be created from the compressed, just clipped sustain of traditional Chicago Blue to the sweet scream of full tube overload. This guitar effects pedal also works very well with Bass Guitar as an increasing number of bass player are rediscovering the joys of adding both compression and distortion to their sound.
Electronically the Voodoo-Bass and Voodoo-1 each share all the same features but the equalisation sections have been altered to provide a completely different set of optimised tone response .
The Voodoo-Bass is housed in the new style enclosure with both dual direct drive buffered outputs or hard wire output and has provision for an internal 9-Volt Battery (battery life 150Hrs) or can be powered from a 9-Volt DC Power Adapter (not supplied). " Sonically, the Voodoo-Bass is similar to that original Voodoo-1 pedal (as in Jimi´s "Voodoo Chile"), giving anything from a slight natural crunch to a smooth powerful distortion. At maximum gain it makes a medium-sized combo sound like something about four times bigger, but without the over-compressed wall of noice associated with most stomp boxes. In fact it allows for very dynamic playing; chug a chord from soft-and-damped to loud-and-ringing and the pedal goes with you - from quiet and relatively clean to over-the-edge grunge. Alternatively, simply control your overall volume ( and hence amount of distortion ) from your guitar´s volume knob. The Voodoo-Bass is designed to give a single coil pickup a gutsier tone, more like that of a classic humbucker. It definitely gets into same ball park... the low middle stays thick and constant no matter how the tone is set, and it´s this region that has the humbucker character - a really handy approximation for someone wanting a change of sound at the press of a button." " The Voodoo-Bass sounds refreshingly unboxy, and with most types of amps it does the job really professionally."
Making Music Dec / -96
"The voodoo-Bass is an analogue fuzz box that adds thickness to any bass-and at higher gain settings, the Voodoo-Bass simulates the tube-like sag of a full-blast vintage amp."

Voodoo Axe -
More information »
The Voodoo-Axe is our latest fuzz guitar effect pedal and has many of the qualities the Axis Fuzz which I designed for Jimi in 1968. Jimi used the original Axis on the landmark recording 'Axis Bold as Love' and the Voodoo-Axe is an evolution from my original design The original Axis Fuzz is still in production today but the Voodoo-Axe offers an alternative and exciting range of new modern tone colours for those who want to experience the same basic sound qualities of the original but extend and modify the tone to suit today's music.
I have taken this great classic fuzz sound and added a very effective Fatness control which extends and tightens the low end response without becoming woolly and indistinct. The very tight and extended low end was expressly designed to compliment the use of dropped tunings and dynamically responds very well to this new range of modern sounds. The Voodoo-Axe reacts in a human way to the players touch as it uses a significant part of this information to continuously adjust it's operating point. The quality of distortion produced is very musical to the ear and responds well to the use of chords. The Guitar volume control works in perfect harmony with the unit to control the amount of distortion. The background noise is very low and encourages the use of lots of sustain without hiss and the extremely large output swing will drive the front end of any amplifier to its limit. It has the highest output level of any of my distortion or fuzz units and you can use it very effectively as a power booster.
Electronically the Voodoo-Axe shares all the same basic Voodoo Series features with dual output buffering or hard wire output etc. The distortion section use discrete transistors in the same configuration as the Axis but with added passive EQ to give more flexibility.

"The Voodoo-Axe is the Axis for the 90s, with bigger gain stage and enormous amount of output" "where it really differs from Roger Mayers excellent Voodoo-One , is it's extended Low EQ control. Dial up the "fatness" to take your fuzz way down deep - even for tunings dropped as low as C#, making it perfect for Sepultura-style heavy bass riffing." "Use your guitar volume control and the gain control to take you from Gilmour-esque rock through Stevie Ray blues and right into Sepultura scooped midgrunge." "It's perfect for hard rock and blues, and is blisfully free of the tinniness that you get from retro-style fuzz pedals."
Total Guitar Oct/-96, issue 23 page 30.
"Definitely a fuzz box rather than a distortion pedal, the Voodoo-Axe gives a real buzz-saw edge to the sound, with a little compression ´duck´ at the start of a big chord. The tone knob is re-labelled Fatness and accordingly adds (or takes away) some low middle body, leaving the top end untouched: one frequent criticism of Sixties´fuzz pedals was their tendency to thin out the tone (who cared when you were such an exciting new sound), but the Voodoo-Axe gives you control over this without tampering unnecessarily with the real bottom end. Turn the gain up full and it´s an abrasive and totally thrilling distortion... Single, high notes tend to scream out, rather than sing out, while heavy, low E-string riffing makes the sound start to brake up in an exciting way." " As for the Voodoo-Axe... Well, just try it out and tell me it isn´t the most fun you´ve had with a guitar for ages."
Making Music Dec / -96
" The Voodoo-Axe offers a more in-vogue fuzztone sound than the Voodoo-1´s thicker, more mainstream distortion. It gets fizzy and flappy on full gain, and when backed off will add sizzle and squash to an already crunchy tone. The fatness control does exactly what it says, adding breath to the distortion sound as you turn it clockwice; in fact it seems to get fatter the more gain you add. As ever with Mayer´s distortion boxes, the Voodoo-Axe is very reactive to volume and pickup changes. With a Strat sounds range from Texas-type sizzle to mushed-out Hendrix with plenty of suck and sonic corruption ."
The Guitar Magazine Oct /-96
"The Voodoo-Axe will provide an ideal way for de-tuners and seven stringers alike to get gutsy tones that don't go all mushy at the bottom. Isn't it about time you thought about getting some classic tones into your pedal chain? It may not turn you into the next Hendrix, but it'll give your sound an original flavour that no budget multi-fx processor can get close to."

Voodoo Boost -
More information »
The Voodoo Boost is the latest in the Voodoo Series of analogue guitar effects and differs from all the other Distortion and Fuzz effects we make in almost every key area of operation. It has been designed expressly to compliment the many various designs of amplifiers in use today and should be used last in the effects chain just before the amplifier. It is not only excels in live situations but also is equally versatile in the recording studio. It controls not only volume boost but also has a fatness control and gain/distortion control to give a truly wide range of operational possibilities. The direct dual drive outputs also make parallel or multi path processing easy without having to buy any other splitter device. The following sections will give some idea of the many ways it can be used.
Volume Boost: The Voodoo Boost is capable of a significant distortion free volume boost to the amplifiers input at the touch of the footswitch. The fatness control will sets the tone required when this boost is required. Normally if only volume boost is required the gain control is set to minimum and the output level control adjusts the amount of boost. The overall output capability of the unit is sufficient to make the amplifier stages distort severely if required. 1st stage distortion can also be introduced by lowering the amplifiers volume control and raising the Voodoo Boost output level. The output level from guitar pickups is usually not enough to overload the 1st stage significantly so this is a new area to try. The Voodoo Boost will give a simple classic amp channel switching features.
Fatness Control: This control does what it says, you dial on fatness of tone. It is not just a simple tone circuit but has been carefully crafted to produce a remarkably wide range of useful amplifier tones. Screaming Tweed Twang to Classic British 4 x12 tones can be emulated with ease. So set your amp to a neutral tone setting and experience the range of tone control provided. There is no overriding nasal tonal quality that plagues so many pedals and the openness of the tone quality is truly amazing.
Gain: The overall internal gain of the unit can be adjusted to introduce very pleasant internal harmonic distortion which when used in conjunction with the output control unleashes unlimited sonic combinations. Remember to use the bypass frequently to return to your reference point. The amount of gain available should satisfy even the most diehard metal head. There are many sonic possibilities available from mild crunch to absolute overdrive insanity as the various combinations of amp distortion and or Voodoo Boost distortion are experimented with.
The Voodoo Boost is housed in the new style enclosure with both dual direct drive buffered outputs or hard wire output and has provision for an internal 9-Volt Battery (battery life 150Hrs) or can be powered from a 9-Volt DC Power Adapter (not supplied). Extensive internal filtering ensures that noise free operation is maintained even with the most basic of adapters. "you're not going to have to sacrifice cleanliness for volume with this box, Chords are easily distinguishable, even when heavily overdriven, and this pedal also responds well to backing off the volume on your guitar."
"Screaming leads and chunky rhythm are both easy to find, as are cool blues tones, particularly when you balance the gains carefully with your amp. As well as allowing you to go somewhere completely different halfway through a song, it's easy to set up the Boost to add more impact to your sound in a subtle way: kicking in for the last chorus on a rhythm part, for example, just after a key change."
Guitar Magazine April 2002
"The Voodoo-Boost certainly manages to breath new life into any single channel amplifier you care to plug it into"
"It's worth pointing out though that the fatness control isn't just a simple treble roll -off device in the way your average passive tone control works. Instead, it operates more like a cabinet simulator than a conventional tone control. adding 4 x 12 oomph when required.

Voodoo Blues -
More information »
A lot of people have requested me to make new unique dual purpose guitar pedal with clean sustain and overdrive that can be used with chords. I am proud to announce the Voodoo-Blues a revolutionary new design which can be set to provide both overdrive and clean boost.
I have over the years repeatedly refused to make an updated copy or clone of the Tube Screamer because I personally was never happy with its nasal tone and lack of detail and dynamics. A new innovative design approach was needed to make a unique product that would be a significant improvement. The Voodoo-Blues is the result. A unique new guitar effects pedal that uses a completely different circuit to produce a set of very musical overtones with feed forward compression as it slips into overdrive. The full dynamics and detail of the guitars tone are faithfully preserved and the unit cleans up perfectly with the guitar Volume control.
I urge you to compare the Voodoo-Blues with any type of overdrive pedal for you to "experience the difference" and not agree that it does its job beautifully and gives the discerning player an alternative for those who demand this type of overdrive. Our "Forward Ever - Backward Never" approach to effects design has fuelled our success since 1964 and has enabled us to move the goal posts forwards again setting new benchmark standards.
The output level is high enough to drive the 1st Stage of Tube Amplifiers into distortion if required and the Fatness control does what it says and is not just a simple EQ section.
It has all the usual features of our Voodoo-Series pedals and is a welcome addition to the range.
Don't imagine that it can only be used for Blues as its characteristics lend itself very well to Rock and Country as well.
The Voodoo-Blues is housed in the new style enclosure with both dual direct drive buffered outputs or hard wire output and has provision for an internal 9-Volt Battery (battery life 150Hrs) or can be powered from a 9-Volt DC Power Adapter (not supplied). Voodoo Vibe+ -
More information »
HISTORY:
The Voodoo-Vibe+ is the latest evolution of the Univibe as used by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower. The Voodoo-Vibe+ will faithfully reproduce all the old retro sounds and incorporates the modifications I personally developed for Jimi. The Supervibe was my next evolution of the Univibe and many leading performers including Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robin Trower used this unit. The Voodoo-Vibe followed the Supervibe and is accepted as the industry leader and used by many top performers. The Voodoo-Vibe + also has a Tremolo circuit plus the usual Chorus and Vibrato functions and the control of the sound parameters has been greatly expanded. The addition of Pulse Square waveforms to the normal Classic waveforms is a valuable and useful addition to the sweep capabilities. The Speed of the sweep generator has also been expanded together with the Symmetry Range and these features greatly increase the options of producing many new and unheard effects and the Voodoo-Vibe+ is a modern and worthy successor to our very successful Voodoo-Vibe. The art of analogue processing has moved forward.
Technical:
The Voodoo-Vibe is completely analogue in operation and exhibits a very transparent and full sound quality that is lacking in digital products that simulate chorus and flanging effects The digital zipper noise and graininess is eliminated and the guitar tone is maintained throughout the full dynamic range. Class A discrete circuitry is used in all audio stages and results in ultra high audio quality and very low noise. The signal to noise ratio of the unit is 102dB, which is about 12dB better than a CD. Extensive internal power supply filtering is used so that the low noise performance is maintained when using even the most basic commercial mains adapter or battery eliminator.
FRONT PANEL CONTROLS:
Function:
The unit can be set to operate in Chorus, Vibrato or Tremolo modes by the front panel switch.
Speed Range:
The Voodoo-Vibe+ enables a selection of three speed ranges of either Classic or Pulse waveform. These two different types of sweep waveform when used in conjunction with the Symmetry control will allow completely different types of sweep effects to be produced. The maximum speed has been greatly increased to provide a blurred effect with sub-harmonic undertones being produced as the frequency reaches maximum. The maximum speed capacity should be investigated in any of the three operational modes together with the various intensity and symmetery parameters.
Speed:
This control allows the fine setting of the speed range as selected by the Speed Range switch.
Symmetry:
This controls the linearity of the Classic and ON/OFF ratio of the Pulse waves, which are used to sweep the filter sections or modulate the tremolo section. When the ratio of the rise and fall time of the Classic wave is varied from the usual symmetrical 50% to other values it has the audible effect of altering the way the filter sweeps as the symmetry is adjusted away from the norm. It is now possible to have a fast rise and a slow decay or the reverse by manipulation of this control. The ON/OFF ration of the pulse wave can be varied in a similar manner to provide variable switching waveforms for the modulation filters or tremolo section. The intensity ,bias and symmetery controls work together providing a wide range of effects.
Wild pulse tremolo sounds are easily created as well as outrageous modulation effects.
Bias:
This control enables the unit to be tuned to produce different sweep effects in the chorus and vibrato modes and will change the centre sweep frequency. In the tremolo mode the bias sets the depth of effect as well as the offset. This control is one of the most important sweep parameters to get right and it pays to only make small changes and carefully evaluate them.
Intensity:
The level of depth of effect can be set by this control and is used in conjunction with the other controls to set up the effect required.
Output:
This controls sets the Output Level required.
REAR JACK PANEL SOCKETS:
Input Jack:
The unit is powered on by inserting a lead into this socket when using the internal 9V battery. Keep the plug out of this socket when not in use.
HW Out:
This is a hard wire or true bypass output. The dual buffered outputs are disconnected when this output is selected.
Buffered Out:
These are identical dual low impedance Class A buffered outputs and are provided to act as a splitter both in the bypass and effect modes thus enabling long cable lengths to be driven with no high frequency loss or to facilitate parallel path signal processing.
To / From:
These two jack sockets are for connection to an external foot volume pedal (not supplied) for the external control of speed. Please consult website/manuals to download wiring diagrams to allow the use of commercial volume pedals.
DC Power Jack:
An external AC adapter (not supplied) can be used and access is through a standard DC power jack situated next to the jack sockets. It uses the standard negative centre pin connection protocol used by many leading manufacturers. Internal onboard filtering ensures that optimum low noise performance is maintained and diode protection provides peace of mind in case of polarity setting mistakes.
Internal Battery:
Access to the internal battery is made by loosing the 4 screws on the bottom to allow the cover to open and it is recommended to use a premium alkaline type battery for the longest life.

Classic-X Design Features:
The Classic-X Fuzz is a modern evolution from the commercial germanium transistor fuzz pedals I modified for Jimi. The Classic-X maintains the guitars original tone characteristics with the open sound and sonic heritage that is the trademark of Jimi's recordings. The new feature and advantages of the front-end buffer will appeal to those players who strive for a modern sound with strong roots in the past. The use of front end buffering was pioneered by me and used in Jimi's recordings. You can select this feature by moving the jumpers on the pc card.
Make no mistake this is not a clone of an old design that duplicates the original faults and shortcomings. I have used the same basic transistor configuration but with several new innovations applied to the very basic circuit that was used then. We employ a careful selection procedure for the two PNP germanium transistors and the pc card also has a pre-set to optimise the circuit for varying operational temperatures. The new Classic-X is a very Low Noise high gain design, stable, free from radio and other electronic interference that cause so much trouble.
It has a greatly increased output level that enables it to overdrive the front end of any amp as hard as you want with the Drive set to minimum distortion in volume boosting mode. Turn up the Gain or Drive control and produce some of the deepest and tight low-end fuzz you have ever heard with the top end staying sweet encouraging soaring string bends and wild solos. The Fatness Control has been carefully developed to produce a wide range of well-rounded musical tone colours.
The unit really comes into it's own during live performance situations as it cleans up superbly well using the guitar volume control and maintains the guitars original tone as the signal decays from wild distortion to original guitar tone. This unit can be effectively controlled from the guitar making life a great deal easier for the player who likes to change tone effortlessly.
Because the circuit senses and uses electronic information directly from the guitar's pickups to control it's own operational parameters it is recommended to use the Classic-X 1st in the signal processing chain to take full advantage of this internal feed forward feature. It is this particular feature of the Classic-X that helps to make it quite different from early fuzz pedals and makes the unit respond very well to each individual players touch, style and playing technique.
Five minutes playing with the Classic-X Fuzz will convince anyone this is not just a re-hashed design but genuinely innovative with some new tone colours. Also when using the buffered outputs you have a package that interfaces perfectly in modern digital recording situations.
FEATURES :
MULTI-MODE OUTPUTS / HARD WIRE BYPASS/ TWO BUFFERED OUTPUTS :
The Classic - X has a hard wire output (true bypass) plus two buffered outputs that can drive long cable lengths with no high frequency loss.
50Hrs or more using a premium grade alkaline 9 Volt type.
EXTERNAL POWER ADAPTER / SUPPLY :
An external AC adapter (not supplied) can be used and access is through a standard DC power jack situated next to the jack sockets. It uses the standard negative centre pin connection protocol used by many leading manufacturers. Internal onboard filtering ensures that optimum low noise performance is maintained and diode protection provides peace of mind in case or polarity setting mistakes.

Mongoose History:
The Mongoose was developed in 1985 for guitarists who demand a guitar effect with lots of fat fuzz and enough bottom end to keep a metal head happy. The Mongoose also sounds as if it has a pre-set type wah voice that gives the distortion distinctive focus. It has proved popular with a wide and varied type of guitar player from Metal through Rock and Jazz. It is more modern sounding and civilised sounding than the Axis or Classic Fuzz and has found a niche with those who want an alternative but not too radically different sound that the current range of mass-produced units from the USA, Japan and Far East produce.
Electronically the Mongooose uses a combination of both discrete and IC analogue design techniques. The clipping circuit primarily comes from a passive diode circuit resulting in smooth compression and harmonic overtones providing a smooth and transparent transition from clean to overload states. Chords sound very good and with the amazing amount of sustain available, feedback is possible at the lowest amplifier volume settings. These features have made the Mongoose popular in the recording studio and similar situations where feedback is desirable at low sound levels.
Current users include Bono (U2) and Joe Perry (Aerosmith).
